Café Grounded
Café Grounded was conceptualized by Jeff and Renee Mauro. They were attracted by the Quonset Hut because “it is not your typical sheet rock building”. Jeff and Renee conceived and designed every aspect of the retrofitted the space with great care and ingenuity. They opened Café Grounded almost four years ago and built it into the coolest little café on the CT Shoreline with the help of Jeff’s Dad, Armand. The Quonset Hut was developed during World War II as a modular, in-expensive, pre-fab structure. The Quonset Hut was named for the town Quonset, RI where nearly 170,000 of these units were built for the US Navy. Since World War II, the Quonset Hut has been used for a wide array of building purposes, Robert Finton even wrote a play based on the Quonset Hut, “Tents of Tin”. The Café Grounded is now part of Speziale Enterprises, LLC (SEL). The same company that operates the Speziale worked over the years to turn the beachfront “snack bar” into a dining destination in In Café Grounded, SEL, will strive to build on the Mauros’ achievements in transforming this classic building into a unique venue. Executive Chef Andrew Speziale is advancing the quality and food selections relying on his years of experience and training.
